States allowed with some limitations:

California - Any automatic (switchblade) knife, having a blade two inches in length or more, should not be carried, possessed in a vehicle or location open to the public, or transferred.

Connecticut - law allows the possession and carry of automatic knives subject to a very restrictive 1 ½ inches blade length maximum

Massachusetts - law allows the possession and carry of automatic knives subject to a very restrictive 1 ½ inches blade length maximum

New Jersey - law allows for home use only

New York - law allows possession of an OTF knife for use while hunting, trapping or fishing by a person carrying a valid license only

Vermont - knife laws changed in 2025, when the state’s blade length restrictions on automatic knives were eliminated by legislation. Knives may be carried openly or concealed

Restrictions on Carry in Specific Locations / Circumstances:

It is unlawful to possess any weapon, including knives, on school property. This restriction does not apply to “butter” knives or “knife-shaped” objects but does apply to folding knives.
