The following is from the TSA website outlining what self-defense and personal security protection products are permissible in checked baggage:
Stun guns and Tasers are permitted in checked baggage as long as they are transported in a manner that renders the device inoperable from accidental discharge. These must have removeable batteries that and be carried separately with your carry-on baggage.
Pepper Sprays are permitted in checked bagger only. A single container of no more than 4 ounces (118ml) of pepper spray or mace is allowed, if it has a safety mechanism that prevents accidental discharge. Any self-defense sprays that contain more than 2 percent of mass, or tear gas (cs or cn) are prohibited.
While stun guns, pepper sprays and tasers are often the preferred choice for protection while traveling, there are other forms of protection that are often overlooked and are great additions for personal safety.
- Personal Alarm Keychain– These small, discreet keychains transform into emergency alarms. Personal alarms emit a high decibel alarm that can deter or disorient an attacker. Some models have LED lights when activated and are a great choice for night travel.
- Door Stop Alarms– We are at our most vulnerable when we are asleep. Placed underneath your door, the pressured sensitivity of the wedge activates a blaring siren if someone tries to enter your room. Not only a great choice for travel, but door also stop alarms can be used at home for added protection.
